Last week we popped along to the incredible Star Wars toy convention, Echo Base Live. The amazing collection of original figures took us back to childhood and the heady days of the '70s and '80s.

Back then the appearance of a Star Wars actor on the BBC was quite something. Luckily the Beeb has pulled some of the best bits together for us.

How did that come about?

It all stared when we stumbled across two wonderful vintage British Railways travel posters. You can read the full story in this blog post. 

Art of the Movies HQ is about 2.5 miles from Warner Brothers Studios Leavesden but, incredibly, until last weekend, the AotM family had never been to their Making of Harry Potter experience.

What an experience it is! Without spoiling any of the magic, here are a few of our highlights. 

Over the past few years we have all become more aware of the impact that we have on the small planet we call Earth.

In 2021 we approached Ecologi, an environmental organisation who fund climate positive projects around the world, to see how we could try and address our own impact... 

This week we share news of a fantastic new book for fans of Studio Ghibli and Japanese Anime movies.

Plus, we have teamed up with Waterstones to give you a chance to win two books and a framed Spirited Away movie poster!

An increasing number are comfortable holding their hard-earned in the form of Bitcoins or other digital currencies such as Dogecoin, Ethereum, Dai and Litecoin. So, we have developed our website and processes to accept them as payment.

Given the concerns over power consumed by such currencies, we will double the number of trees we plant for any orders completed in a cryptocurrency.

Remember the 1980's? A decade of VHS versus Betamax, trips to the local video store and some of the best (and worst) movies ever made.

This week we are delighted to introduce a new voice to the blog as Lee Adams shares his movie watching resumé in “Tales From the Video Store”!

It was fantastic to settle down a few Sundays ago and watch the Comic-Con@Home panel "Masters of the Illustrated Film Poster - The Sequel'.

Building on last year's ground-breaking panel this year's virtual discussion brought some movie poster legends and some 'new kids on the block' to our screens in a fascinating discussion that showed the mutual respect and admiration between a group that have shaped so much of our popular culture.

In these unsettled times it is hard to know when many will feel safe enough to amble around a museum or art gallery, yet alone travel Internationally to sample another culture.

World over, cultural institutions are working hard to adapt and to present their story in new ‘no contact’ ways.

A fantastic example that pre-dates our Covid-19 world is the amazing Hollywood Art Museum, packed full of Star Wars and movie poster goodies!

A few months ago, long before any of the current madness descended, we enjoyed an amazing evening at our local independent cinema. Not to watch a movie, but to virtually visit the theatre and to watch the amazing James Corden in ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’. 

With the social distancing lock-down in place, you can’t visit the National Theatre, nor can you watch one of their productions in the cinema, but, thanks to National Theatre At Home, starting this week, you can watch ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ from the comfort of your own arm-chair...

These are worrying times. Above all else, we hope that you, your loved ones, friends and families are heeding the latest government advice and staying safe.

While we are all maintaining our social distance and spending more time at home, I imagine that, like us, you are getting through more movies and box-sets than usual.

For those in the UK, don’t forget the BBC iPlayer where you can find two fantastic series for the movie lover…

In their March 2020 edition, the superb EMPIRE magazine chose their ‘100 Greatest Movies of the Century (so far!)’.

We were quite surprised by their number one pick.
