Following the phenomenal success of the Lord of the Rings movies, Jackson began working on a two-film adaptation of The Hobbit with Guillermo del Toro. After del Toro dropped out of the project, Jackson took back directorial duties, filming three films back-to-back. This, the final movie, is highly regarded as the pinnacle of the trio!
