Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is now hailed as the great director's masterpiece and its influence can be seen all the way from Contact to Interstellar.

It is hard to believe it was initially panned by critics and by the studio's own executives (who Kubrick had kept at arm's length throughout production).
