As I write, cinemas and movie theatres world over are in a difficult position. They cost millions to build and tens of thousands of pounds to operate each month. In the U.K. alone, they directly employ around 20,000 people. For the 6000 movie theatres in the U.S., the number of employees may be closer to 200,000.
But Hollywood also has some problems. Taking a look at some of the movies that should have hit the big screen this year…
Disney’s Mulan had a production budget of $200M. Christopher Nolan’s TENET cost Warner Bros $225M. Daniel Craig’s final 007 outing, a whopping $250M.
After publicity costs, the break-even point for each is probably double its production cost. To have any chance of reaching that, studios and distributors need to be certain that the film-going public will visit their local cinema / movie theatre.
In the U.K. cinemas are starting to reopen. Many are showing old classics like Back to the Future, Dirty Dancing and Grease.
The top grossing film for the weekend of 12th July was The Empire Strikes Back, but it only took £51K. At the end of February, the Invisible Man took £2.2M.
Add on the continued impact of COVID in the United States and it was inevitable that studios would begin to push back some of their major releases.
Surprisingly, TENET still looks set for an end of August release. However, Disney have now delayed Mulan indefinitely. Others are likely to follow.
But the movies are as important as ever, we all need some escapism and many of us are getting our film fix at home. Many are even turning a small corner of our home in to a home cinema / theatre.
