Stephen Spielberg originally purchased the film-rights to American cartoonist William Steig's 1990 picture book Shrek!, before passing them over to his recently founded animation studio. It would be seven years before the loveable green ogre would reach the silver screen.

Winner of the first ever Best Animated Feature Oscar, it would go on to take nearly $500M at the box office against a production budget of $60M. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz would reprise their roles in another three Shrek movies!
