We have written a lot about the impact that movie poster artists have had (and continue to have) on popular culture. Think of a movie and it is often the movie poster you see in your mind’s eye.
Tragically, for many years, most artists remained unknown. A few of the greats (amongst them Bill Gold, Drew Struzan, Saul Bass, John Alvin, Frank McCarthy and Robert McGinnis) now have their careers documented in print. But, when you look at any poster fan’s book-shelf, there has always been one name missing. Richard Amsel.
Thankfully, that is about to change…
Richard Amsel
Even if you haven’t heard Richard Amsel’s name, you know his work. In a career cut all too short he illustrated a host of magazine, book and album covers and was responsible for some of the most iconic movie posters of the late Twentieth Century.
Combining a genius for design with the most gentle of artistic touches, his movie posters stand as giants of the age.
Adam McDaniel
Author, film-maker, screen-writer, artist – Adam McDaniel is ‘all of the above’. He is also a leading authority on the life and work of Richard Amsel. Since 2008 his expanding web-site has been the definitive Amsel resource. In parallel, he has criss-crossed the U.S. researching and conducting over fifty interviews with Amsel's friends and fans. The results of this labour of love are about to bloom.
"Through an exclusive agreement with the Richard Amsel estate, CINEMALAD PRODUCTIONS is excited to announce a feature documentary now in the final stages of production, and the development of a new retrospective book on the late artist’s work."
Now that is exciting!
We will be chatting with Adam in the coming days and will publish a longer blog post in the coming weeks. For now, why not check out his website and learn a little more about the late, great, Richard Amsel.
