A guaranteed original U.K. Quad movie poster for the 1978 release of Stanley Kubrick's astonishing sci-fi epic, 1968's "2001: A Space Odyssey".
Based on the short story "The Sentinel" by Arthur C. Clarke, the screenplay was written jointly by Kubrick and Clarke. Although financed by MGM from the U.S., the film was largely made in the U.K and the movie's ground-breaking visual effects earned Kubrick an Oscar. One of four of the film's nominations.
This superb movie poster was produced for the 1978 re-release of the film. The continued success of Star Wars (released the year before, but still running in U.K. cinemas and U.S. movie theatres) raised interest in classic sci-fi films. While publicising Star Wars, George Lucas told Rolling Stone magazine that while he thought the two films could be compared technically, he thought that 2001 was “far superior".
So for the British 1978 release, they leaned heavily in to the Star Wars link and included the full Lucas quote on the movie poster!
This example was originally issued folded (as were the vast majority of posters at the time), but has now been professionally linen-backed by our paper conservators and as our photos show, displays incredibly well. A wonderful poster for the sci-fi fan or Star Wars completist!
