A guaranteed original '8x10' promotional movie still from John Sturges 1963 World War II classic "The Great Escape", starring, well, just about everybody!
It is astonishing that the events portrayed in this film are based on the real-life activities of Allied prisoners of war at camp Stalag Luft III. One night, in late March 1944, seventy six prisoners escaped through a tunnel they had painstakingly built straight under the camp. (It was actually one of three tunnels they built!) All but three were quickly recaptured and fifty of them were executed under Hitler's instruction.
Hollywood's portrayal of the prisoners and their escape is an inevitably fictional account, but officers who had taken part in the escape attempt acted as technical advisers to the production and many of the characters are 'composites' of real life prisoners.
Now considered a classic, original movie posters and memorabilia for the film are highly sought after,
This fantastic movie still showing Steve McQueen as Captain Virgil Hilts was snapped by a Unit Still Photographer (probably Léo L. Fuchs or Lothar Winkler) during filming and was then used for promotion during the film's release.
It is in wonderful condition and has been framed by us in a black ayous wood frame with an iced white mount, protective barrier board and crystal clear acrylic glazing. As our photos show, it will look amazing on display!
