As the New Year began and 2022 turned in to 2023, Avatar: The Way of Water was two weeks in to its phenomenal cinematic run. Most pundits thought it would do well, but few stuck their neck out and predicted a £2.3B world-wide box office. That makes it the third highest grossing film of all time, with a bronze medal behind its predecessor and Avengers: Endgame.
UK Cinema Association figures show attendance for the first five months of the year is similar to 2022. That will be good news to movie producers, distributors and cinemas, even if it is still 30% down on Pre-Covid levels.
Here are the films that movie goers have been flocking to, the Top 10 films by global box office so far this year.
A few of those films (particularly Disney's The Little Princess and the phenomenal Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) are in the middle of their cinematic releases and will end up with far bigger numbers, but it is Nintendo's plumbing brothers who have set the box office alight so far!
