The Films We Are Looking Forward To July to December 2023

As the New Year began and 2022 turned in to 2023, Avatar: The Way of Water was two weeks in to its phenomenal cinematic run. Most pundits thought it would do well, but few stuck their neck out and predicted a £2.3B world-wide box office. That makes it the third highest grossing film of all time, with a bronze medal behind its predecessor and Avengers: Endgame.

UK Cinema Association figures show attendance for the first five months of the year is similar to 2022. That will be good news to movie producers, distributors and cinemas, even if it is still 30% down on Pre-Covid levels.

Here are the films that movie goers have been flocking to, the Top 10 films by global box office so far this year.

A few of those films (particularly Disney's The Little Princess and the phenomenal Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) are in the middle of their cinematic releases and will end up with far bigger numbers, but it is Nintendo's plumbing brothers who have set the box office alight so far!

So, a solid start to the year as the remnants of Covid delayed productions clear. What does the rest of the year hold?

To pick out a few highlights, Tom Cruise runs, jumps and flies in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part One (he must be an insurance broker's nightmare), Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling play Barbie and Ken in perhaps the least likely film of the year, Christopher Nolan's thriller Oppenheimer explodes on to the big screen and Denis Villeneuve finishes off his expansive vision of the 'un-filmable' Dune.
