Happy New Year! We hope that 2026 is a wonderful year for you and your loved ones!
Before we take a peek at the films we are looking forward to in 2026, let's take a look back at 2025 at the cinema.
The year's global box office shows us that family favourites and animated hits continue to lead the way, with China's fantasy sequel Ne Zha 2 topping the charts as a worldwide phenomenon, grossing over $2 billion and delighting audiences with its vibrant mythology and animation. Disney scored big too, with Zootopia 2 grossing over $1.4 billion, and the live-action Lilo & Stitch also passing the $1 billion mark. A Minecraft Movie also came close to the magical threshold, taking $958 million by appealing to both gamers and non-gamers alike.

As in the previous few years, large franchises also fared well. Jurassic World : Rebirth pulled in $869 million, and as I write, Avatar: Fire and Ash has already taken over $760 million and is bound to pass the $1B target soon.
Mid-range performers like Mission: Impossible : The Final Reckoning (around $599 million) and The Fantastic Four : First Steps (about $522 million) offered block-busting spectacle, but Marvel's Captain America : Brave New World ($415) and Thunderbolts* ($382M) failed to hit the heights of their pre-pandemic predecessors.

Overall, 2025 was varied. There were big expectations for the likes of TRON: Ares ($142M) and The Running Man ($68M), but neither found their cinema-going audience, an issue that affected a significant number of big-name movies.
Meanwhile, some smaller films (see Bugonia, One Battle After Another and Pillion) earned critical respect even when their box office was limited, showing that artistic ambition and commercial success don't always go hand in hand.
Here is the complete run down of the Top 20 films of 2025.

Looking ahead, 2026 looks like it is going to be a big year for film-goers - of all sorts.
