In 2019, the top nine films of the year all took over $1B at the box office. The top film of the year, the MCU's Avengers: Endgame took an incredible $2.8B!
For understandable reasons, 2020 and 2021 were very different. In 2020, no film took over $0.5B. In 2021 only Spider-Man was able to swing past the $1B mark, finishing with an amazing $1.9B, over $1B ahead of the second-place film.
2022 has marked some-what of a recovery. Albeit, an uncertain one. Jurassic World, Doctor Strange, The Minions, Batman and Black Panther all fared well. But it was Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick that soared high, taking close to $1.5B. Despite all of that, for the first eleven months of the year, audiences have remained a third below pre-covid levels.
We think that is about to change. If only for a month or two. As I sit and write, on a wet and windy New Year's Eve, James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water has taken an astonishing £1.2B in just two weeks. With the festive break on-going and with no Blockbuster competition until February, who would bet against Avatar's wave rolling and rolling? It is the film that cinemas and movie-theatres have been waiting for.
Cinema owners and their advertisers are also bullish for 2023 and with good reason. Releases are picking up and 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the movie-goer.
