The Films We Are Looking Forward To - Autumn and Winter 2022
After an impossible 2020 and a very difficult 2021, the start of the year was still sluggish for UK cinemas. Doctor Strange, Batman, The Minions and Thor provided big movie box offices, but the only stellar performance came from Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick. It's UK box office ($93M) is almost twice that of its nearest rival.
Unfortunately, there have been fewer blockbusters to follow it up. We have Covid related production delays to blame for that. The result has contributed to a drop of a third in overall cinema attendance.
The impact? Financial restructuring at Vue and a tactical bankruptcy protection filing by the world's second largest cinema chain, Cineworld.
But, there is nothing quite like the big screen experience and cinema advertisers are still bullish. With good reason, releases are picking up. Marvel, Avatar and DC are all releasing major films in the final quarter of 2022. We have a promising run-in to a bumper 2023!
