A Week of Two Trailers: Indiana Jones and Guardians of the Galaxy!
Wakanda Forever is still riding high at the global box office (over $0.7B globally so far) and we still have James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water to round out the year, but we are already looking forward to some of the cinematic gems of 2023, and we have just been treated to two incredible trailers.
Indiana Jones 5
In 2008, Harrison Ford joked that he would make a fifth Indiana Jones film, "... as long as it doesn't take twenty years to make." Well, it didn't take quite that long, but it has already been fourteen years since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!
This month, Lucasfilm gave us a 30th June 2023 release date for Indiana Jones 5 - and a title - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
The trailer sees the return of more than one familiar face, a new crop of evil Nazis and more archaeological action than you can crack a whip at!
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
Guardians of the Galaxy was the surprise hit of the early MCU movies. Ubur cool (but definitely not taking itself too seriously), action packed and with a killer soundtrack, it was no surprise that Marvel quickly commissioned director James Gunn to make a sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 hit the big screen in 2017, picking up where its predecessor left off. I still think that the title sequence (4:38 minutes in) is one of the best ever made!
Volume 3 should have been a cinch, but a year in to development, Disney and Marvel fired James Gunn. In the Internet age, the foolishness of youth is preserved for eternity and some bad taste tweets from his early years were certainly at odds with Disney's corporate values.
Gunn's mature handling of the situation, including statements such as "It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.", led to a rethink and six months later, he was reattached to the project.
Following his work on DC's The Suicide Squad, filming of Guardians Vol 3 finally got underway in November 2021. Three years late, It will reach cinemas on 5th May 2023 and Marvel have just released a fantastic new trailer!
So there we have it, the studio marketing teams are kicking off their 2023 campaigns and we cannot wait!
In the meantime, as we all head in to the dark mid-winter, we hope you are starting to feel festive!
