A Teaser Trailer for Amsel: Illustrator of the Lost Art!
Back in early 2021 we shared the journey of artist, author, screen-writer and film-maker Adam McDaniel and his forty year mission to promote and preserve the work of artist Richard Amsel.
Amsel was taken from us far too early, but in his short career produced an astonishing body of work, including many movie posters that you may have grown up with.
However, unlike contemporaries such as Drew Struzan and John Alvin, little was written about his life and work. There was no book, no official website, no film.
Adam McDaniel is doing all he can to change that.
His website has long been the definitive source of Amsel information and after fifteen years of research and over fifty interviews, a film and accompanying book are now coming together.
Amsel: Illustrator of the Lost Art will provide the first in-depth profile of the prolific artist. It will celebrate his work, preserve his creative legacy, and shed light on an enigmatic life marked with personal heartbreak, celebrity friendships, and creative genius.
Over one hundred hours of footage is currently being edited and Adam has just shared a teasing trailer with us – enjoy!
The project has the support and participation of the Richard Amsel estate and will include a variety of animated motion graphics made from Amsel’s iconic original artwork, and new, high-quality digital images – each one painstakingly colour-corrected and restored. This will allow for some of the artist’s most prominent works to be seen in a new and improved light. Perhaps Adam will also share some of the incredible, but lesser known pieces that he has uncovered too.

If you are in the U.S., the project is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit 501(c)(3) arts service organization legally registered as a charity to fundraise throughout the United States. Donations to the documentary are fully tax-deductible where applicable by law - and Adam is currently running a promotion with lots of lovely Amsel goodies up for grabs! You can find out more here.
Adam McD says he still has lots of work to do. We cannot wait for the fruits of his extraordinary labour!
